The atmosphere in Mexico’s camp is at an all-time high ahead of their October friendlies against Colombia and Ecuador, two South American sides already qualified for the 2026 World Cup. Chivas and El Tri goalkeeper Raúl Rangel said that there’s a strong sense of unity and chemistry within Javier Aguirre’s squad as the team gears up.

With just three FIFA international windows left before the World Cup, Aguirre already has a fairly clear picture of the players who will make up Mexico’s final roster. Still, several new names have emerged, creating internal competition that, according to Raúl Rangel, has strengthened the team’s bond.

“The team looks very excited and motivated to face these two challenges,” Rangel said. “Colombia and Ecuador are strong opponents, among the toughest in South America. These games will be demanding, and that level of competition will help us improve as a national team.”

Rangel, who plays for Chivas, has often been part of Aguirre’s squads without much playing time – serving as a backup in 15 matches and appearing in just four, where he has conceded 10 goals. Despite limited minutes, he has earned the trust of the coaching staff and appears set to remain as Mexico’s second goalkeeper.

“I really like his profile, the way he plays both in the air and on the ground. He’s quick and confident,” Aguirre has said about the young goalkeeper.

The 25-year-old described the strong camaraderie among the players since Aguirre’s arrival and the collective mindset heading into the 2026 World Cup.

"That unity – many teammates have mentioned it, and the coach himself has said it,” Rangel said. “We’ve built a really special family. The understanding we’ve developed is very good, and it’s something that shows during every camp and every match.”
